Active@ File Recovery. File selection buttons

Theses buttons are used as follows.

Load sample:

This button allows you to pick a single file and show the data contained within it. This, depending on why it is used, can be very useful. Below is a typical screen that would appear after a file is chosen.

Active@ File Recovery. JPG tag values

The hex numbers on the left represent the actual EXIF tag values that were found.

Most modern digital cameras will by default create a JPG file with an EXIF header that will contain at least the following information.

010F: The manufacturer of the camera
0110: The model of the camera
0132: The date / time the picture was taken

You can use the information in the manufacturer / model fields to narrow down the conditions you consider a picture to be renamable.

For instance, you may only want to recover files from a small list of manufacturers or models and you can use that information in other sections of the GUI. There will be more on how to do that below.

Select source files

This allows you to select one of more files from a folder and put the file names in the 'Chosen source files' list box. These will be processed to see if they can be renamed / copied to a folder structure we create based on information within the file.

Select source folder

This will allow you to choose a single folder and all of its sub folders and have all files entered into the 'Chosen source files' list box. You would use this if you had a folder with tens of thousands of files in it and do not wish to highlight them. Also, you can use this if you see that many of your files are in the 'Lost and found' folder.

Select destination folder

This allows you to choose the base destination folder to move / copy all files to.

For example, if you chose d:\recovered\JPG as your destination folder, all sub folders would be created under that base folder.

You may have a folder structure that looks like d:\recovered\JPG\FUJIFILM\Finepix\2010\11\28\file0123.JPG. In the previous example, the picture was taken by a camera with the manufacturer / model / date information corresponding to the created folder structure. All pictures that were found to have that manufacturer / model / date will be in the same folder.

Clear source files

This will clear all files from the 'Chosen source files' list box.

Clear destination file

This will clear the destination folder and the program will behave as if a destination folder was never chosen.
